Cosmetic Dentistry: Porcelain Veneers
Your smile is an important part of your appearance; it is probably the most important factor of the first impression that you make to others. With veneers, the size, shape, and /or color of your teeth can be altered. Veneers also can be used to mask spaces in between your teeth and correct other imperfections. Dental veneers are thin, custom-shaped porcelain overlays that are attached to the surface of your teeth. Depending on the individual situation, veneers may be used to cover one or multiple teeth. They can also be used in conjunction with porcelain crowns (or caps). Veneers are natural in appearance and virtually undetectable to other people. They are color-stable and wear-resistant so they will maintain their appearance for many years to come.
Porcelain is an ideal material to use in these cosmetic procedures. This is because porcelain is extremely strong and color stable. This strength allows us to make these veneers extremely thin. The veneers are glazed in the lab prior to placement so they as smooth and comfortable as natural tooth enamel and are very kind to the gum tissue.
The procedure is quick, easy, and completely painless. In most cases, less than 1 mm of tooth structure needs to be removed to make room for the veneers. The exact colors are chosen to perfectly match the rest of your mouth An impression is then taken and then sent to the dental lab, where the veneer is custom made to fit your tooth and your mouth. In about ten days, you will be able to return to the office at which time the veneers will be cemented into place with a special bonding cement.
Teeth covered with veneers are extremely natural looking and very easy to maintain. Properly maintained, they can truly last for decades.
